Work plan Kaladrug-R

The purpose of Kaladrug-R is to improve human health. The logo illustrates that the human being is central to this endeavour. The figure als mimics the graphical outline of our Pert chart as shown below. Each discipline or cluster is represneted by a line; all lines are needed to make this picture (project) whole.

Kaladrug-R research activities are organised in 4 clusters of workpackages:

  • clinical cluster to assess VL treatment effectiveness by recruiting and following VL patients treated with antileishmanials and develop innovative tools to monitor treatment effectiveness in endemic regions (WP 2-3-4)
  • lab cluster 1 markers of drug resistance aims to explore biological and molecular mechanisms leading to resistance to Miltefosine (MIL), antimonials (SSG), and paromomycin (PMM) (WP 6-7-8)
  • lab cluster 2 epidomiological dynamics of drug resistance aims to characterise how drug resistance in Leishmania evolves and how parasite fitness relates to drug resistance; furthermore a mathematical model of drug resistance will be developed and used to compare the impact of different intervention strategies (WP 10-11-12)
The 2 laboratory clusters are supported by 2 'connecting' workpackages:
  • WP 5 (genome) to provide genomic information to identify molecular markers for drug resistance and population genetics studies
  • WP 9 (tools) to provide simple tools to test the identified markers on large samples
  • dissemination cluster to contribute to the dissemination and implementation of all Kaladrug-R findings and tools
